Interview: Matthias Steiner
Interview with Matthias Steiner upon his appointment as brand ambassador at AFRISO

Mr Steiner, how did you and AFRISO get together?
Matthias Steiner
“We initially got in contact quite by accident through Blacky Fuchsberger (Joachim Fuchsberger, famous German actor and lyricist). I was on my way to Austria with my family to see my parents when Mr Fuchsberger asked us to pay him a short visit while he was on holiday in Austria. That’s where we met the Fritz family from AFRISO. None of us knew anything about our professional interests until I saw some radiator valves there that looked different than usual. We got talking about hydraulic balancing, and that led to a conversation which for all intents and purposes marks the start of our working together.”

You, yourself, are a qualified central heating system maker and gas fitter/plumber. A job that is becoming more and more complex these days – and unfortunately one which is in little demand in terms of apprenticeships. What do you like about your job and what tip would you like to give young people who are on the lookout for the “right” profession to train in?
Matthias Steiner
“I wanted to learn a trade that interested me, but that was different from my father’s; he was an ace at his trade. That’s how I ended up in gas/water/heating. I really like the extreme diversity as well as the ongoing innovations in this sector. I think most people underestimate all the things a gas fitter/plumber has to know. There is also a very wide variety of materials used. The four years of training were barely enough to acquire a solid basic knowledge. What I’m trying to say is that it is never boring in this trade. For young people who do not know which trade is best for them, I can only advise them to either do different kinds of internships, or drop by a trade fair and have a look. I did the latter.”

AFRISO Logo
Why are you active in the field of building technology of all things and, in particular, in the heating industry?
Matthias Steiner
“On the one hand, of course, because it’s the trade I learned, and on the other, because I find this diversity totally fascinating.”

AFRISO Logo
What induced you to accept your “office” of brand ambassador?
Matthias Steiner
“As brand ambassador I’d like to familiarise end consumers as well as HVAC companies with environmental technology whose main goal is to save energy without cutting on comfort. The products from AFRISO have convinced me right down the line, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to stand behind them the way I do.”

AFRISO Logo
Which aspects of your passion as an athlete now help you in the capacity of brand ambassador for AFRISO?
Matthias Steiner
“As a weightlifter, I also need to have a basic knowledge of techniques and methods. Just training isn’t enough. And I also have to be able to learn quickly in order to fix problems fast. This also comes in handy now, of course, as a brand ambassador. I may know all about the HVAC trade, but I also have to keep up with the latest innovations. The end result, the AFRISO products, already had me convinced. But now I’d like to take a closer look and understand how they work. That’s the only way I can authentically stand behind the AFRISO brand.”

AFRISO Logo
Name three words off the top of your head that describe the AFRISO product portfolio.
Matthias Steiner
“Now I could go with measuring, controlling, monitoring, the key terms of the product portfolio from AFRISO. I choose quality, reliability, energy savings.”

AFRISO Logo
The impression you leave in the public eye is authentic and sincere and you are known for your direct and honest opinions. How does that fit in with AFRISO?
Matthias Steiner
“AFRISO has nothing to hide. It’s a family-run business backed by tradition – that normally speaks for itself – a company that stands for stability. But it is also important when new products enter the market that things don’t necessarily have to be even more complicated and involved. At AFRISO things are usually ingeniously simple and I like that. The aim isn’t just selling, but developing products that customers as well as tradespeople are satisfied with. And we do something good for the environment at the same time. I like it, simple as that.”

AFRISO Logo
You are promoting branded products for the HVAC trade with the AFRISO campaign “Simply strong”. What in your opinion makes German trades strong and fit for the future?
Matthias Steiner
“Since globalization at the latest, I think, sure, Germany hasn’t had much of a chance with mass-produced products on the world market. Producing quality will continue to play a very important role for our country. Products need to be high-quality and durable, the customer satisfied. The same applies of course to the market in Germany too. The better the products, the better they will be for tradespeople to work with.”

AFRISO Logo
Which AFRISO product do you like the best?
Matthias Steiner
“The question is a little unfair since there are so many products at AFRISO that I find fascinating. Nevertheless, I must say that the VarioQ valve range for hydraulic balancing is my favourite. This system is so easy to understand and also relatively simple to use and ingenious at the same time. You can really save energy without a lot of effort. And we’re all interested in that.”

AFRISO Logo
Which trends do you think will be major subjects for the next few years in the HVAC sector?
Matthias Steiner
“I think AFRISO keeps apace of the trends very well, yet also stays with proven solutions as long as this is effective. If we look beyond what AFRISO offers, I’m currently most interested in the development of combined heating and power plants. Generating energy yourself for heat and power at home is really amazing.”

AFRISO Logo
What are the definite benefits of hydraulic balancing for owners and people in the HVAC trade?
Matthias Steiner
“First of all, the end customer hardly notices any difference except that the radiator valves look a little different. The difference doesn’t become noticeable until all of a sudden all rooms warm up at the same rate, and I can still make adjustments. The energy costs too will bring a smile to the end consumer’s face. And any flow noise that remains is no longer noticeable. Tradespeople have the advantage of satisfied customers who will definitely continue to trust in their services and a product which is relatively easy to install. They have to make calculations for the volume of water and the appropriate radiator valves, then install them and adjust them last of all. The necessary calculation program, radiator valves and the measuring instrument are available. I was totally surprised by how easily and effectively it works.”

What are your plans for the future?
Matthias Steiner
“With two kids, that pretty much takes care of the family planning. I’m still involved in the sport, but I’m looking forward to working with AFRISO because I’m open especially to environmental issues and I’m proud to be able to present products that are honest and effective.”
